Burpee Gardening 101

Everybody has that other thing, you know, that thing that you totally could have done but didn’t end up doing. Mine is gardening, and in many ways it’s my dream job. In fact, my first job was at a flower nursery and I have always loved plants and planting thanks to many afternoons gardening with my dad. I always find it refreshing and therapeutic to be around and in God’s creation.

I once thought that I needed acres and acres of land to grow vegetables. But that is clearly not the case. If New Yorkers can grow their veggies on rooftops, I was sure I could manage a decent garden in sunny California. With a few good pots, rich organic soil, some sun, and our garden was started.

One thing I really wanted as I put together our garden were solid, healthy, veggie and herb plants. It didn’t take long to find Burpee Plants, a collection of the leading garden vegetables, herbs and flowers available at your favorite local garden retailer. They offer a huge variety of options, including plants for small spaces, foodies, and even organic. As you know, healthy plants grow healthy vegetables.

What we planted

“Sriracha Hot Pepper” with dark green fruit

“Basket of fire” hot pepper

Sweet Thai Basil

Rutgers DMR Obsession Basil

Boost Tasti-Wee Small Fruited Tomato

Jalapeno Sweet Poppers Sweet pepper

Ristra Cayenne II Hot Pepper (um, yes, we like our peppers)

Sweet Thang Cabbage

Sweet Slaw Cabbage.

All of the above vegetables are from Burpee! Just yesterday, Atalie picked a hot pepper from our container garden. Oh, the excitement in the house! All of a sudden, 4 kids were fighting over who was going to eat it. I had to remind them, peppers are hot!

1 month later . . .

5 Reasons why you should plant a Burpee vegetable garden

1. Vegetables grown in your garden will often have more nutrients than those from the store that often need to be picked early.

2. It helps you eat more veggies! When you’re so involved in the growing of your food, you’ll definitely want to eat it.

3. Gardening is easy and fun, not intimidating. It’s a relaxing, healthy activity that gets the entire family involved.

4. There is nothing quite like eating fresh, ripe veggies in your salsas and dinners.

5. Did you know that gardening is actually proven to combat stress and anxiety? (I knew there was a reason I loved it so much!)

If these aren’t reasons enough, here are two of my favorite things to make with our Burpee garden haul.

Recipes: Tomato Salsa

3 cups chopped tomatoes

1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper

1 cup onion, diced

1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro

2 T fresh lime juice

1 fresh jalapeno pepper, chopped (including seeds)

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Stir the tomatoes, green bell pepper, onion, cilantro, lime juice, jalapeno pepper, cumin, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Serve.

Spinach Basil Pesto

1 1/2 cups spinach leaves

3/4 cup basil leaves

1/2 cup toasted pine nuts

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (more or less to taste)

4 cloves garlic, peeled and quartered

3/4 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1/2 teaspoon lemon zest

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

Blend the spinach, basil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt, pepper, lemon juice, lemon zest, and 2 tablespoons olive oil in a food processor until nearly smooth, scraping the sides of the bowl with a spatula as necessary. Drizzle the remaining olive oil into the mixture while processing until smooth.

Gray boots are the first and favorite things to bust out at the first day of fall. They’re flattering and crazy versatile. I try and buy a new pair at the beginning of the season so I ensure I get my size 9!

Those following me for a while know I love a versatile gray dress and this one is NO EXCEPTION. I wear it dressed up or down and the tulip hem is crazy flattering! See some more of my faves:

Leopard Scarves are some of the best subtle ways to get a lot of pop for the price. Many of them are under $30, and I love them styled tied onto a purse.

I love how a gray bag is the cherry on top of a chic gray monochrome look.

I get so many compliments when I wear a gray coat – here are 4 faves:

Nordstrom never disappoints. From their stellar customer service, awesome online selection, and quick shipment options (hello curbside pick-up), it’s hard not to pick favorites. Since I’m due to welcome baby boy any day now, I opted for a fitted and flattering dress I’ve had on repeat. I added a leopard scarf, gray layer coat, and gray bag for an overall classic monochrome look. Stay tuned for baby news and more favorites from Nordstrom.

How do I find outfits for my kids? I focus on quality fabrics, patterns and clothes they will actually wear and love. When I see them get excited about a shirt or a cool pair of shoes, that’s when I know I’ve found something they not only like, but they’ll actually wear! And yes, it’s all found at Nordstrom!

The moment my oldest saw this cape, she exclaimed, “This would be great for Lake Arrowhead!” And I agree. It’s super soft and perfect for chilly early mornings and late nights. We love it up there. Likewise, my son loves his sweatshirt and especially his new sneakers. He won’t stop wearing them! Kind of like his obsession with his soccer uniform. He wears it so much that hubby and I had to hide it! Anyone else have this happen with a kiddo?

I’m so thankful for Nordstrom curbside pick-up for days when I have to be at soccer practice, art class and tumbling class. Their customer service has won over this busy mama for over a decade. What are some of your Nordstrom faves?

I’m so excited to partner with Nordstrom Back to School for kids. I’m loving all their laid-back pieces to add to my kids’ wardrobe this fall. I honestly love shopping for their autumn staples just as much as my own and Nordstrom makes it too easy.

Because we spend most weekends in the mountains, I was happy to find a lot of pieces that layer really well! Going from warmer temps in LA to the cooler mountain temps can be a little tricky so I had my oldest pick out a plaid blazer to go over her yellow dress. And yes, I let her borrow my Gucci belt bag. You can’t fault her good taste. The boys’ shoes were sporty and adorable. Now I just wish they knew how to tie their shoes, but let’s reserve that for another blog post shall we? Likewise, the girls loved their boots because they look like mom’s! I wonder how long I will get away with them saying that?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—Nordstrom is simply one of my favorites for the kids. With all these adorable back to school options, how can you not want to pick something up for your kiddos?

Teal Feather Earrings (I also love these) // Gold Bracelet(confession: I haven’t taken this off in days) //

Earrings: Lotus in gold – love!

1. Wear statement earrings with your LBD, I always get compliments when I wear them!

2. Knot your favorite white blouse with dark or light skinny jeans.

3. Play with proportion: Wear a trench coat with your favorite cutoffs.

4. Weird weather have you confused about what to wear? Pair a camisole with a cardigan and cutoffs or a maxi skirt.

Some days I overthink an outfit and end up just going back to the basics I know and love like cutoffs and a trench or a statement piece of jewelry like these Kendra Scott earrings.

One thing I love about Kendra Scott is how she merges fashion and philanthropy. She gives back and really practices what she preaches. You can book a “Kendra Gives Back Party” and a portion of the proceeds goes to a charity of your choosing. Isn’t that amazing? I love a brand that makes a quality product and also wants to give back and do good.

Here I’m wearing these gold leaf statement earrings and turquoise feather earrings I find myself grabbing over and over again. Whether you’re headed out for school PTA meetings, a job interview or date night, sometimes you just need an accessory that brings the whole outfit up a notch.

I have some very exciting news today! I’m giving away an Ann Howell Bag! All you have to do to enter is . . .
1. Follow me and @annhowellbullard on IG,
2. Tag a friend on Instagram
3. Comment below on this post which bag you’d like. I worked with Ann back when I was living in Chicago and she had just started her business. I fell in love with her bold graphics. See my first post with her here. Such a fun flashback!
She now sells them at Anthropologie and I’ll admit, it was hard to find a favorite because they’re all so beautiful. Here I styled her circular stripe bag with a black maxi, stripe top knotted as a crop top, pink duster and pink loafers. See 8 of her styles below.
How would you style yours?

This look is the perfect combination of something unique like the Ann Howell bag and all my closet basics. And speaking of basics, Nordstrom has the best options—I’m loving these Gucci loafers, long tunic, flattering jeans, Bella band, and mom-friendly bag slash backpack. My approach to the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year has been to look at it as shopping strategically. It’s so, so easy to feel overwhelmed, which is why I’ve tried to break things down into categories and think forward for fall and winter. And speaking of fall and winter, there are so many classic investment pieces on sale right now for the upcoming seasons. You know, the things you know your closet needs but always seem a little too pricey to actually buy. Now is definitely the time! Sales can be a fun time to try more trendy items at a discount, but I’m definitely shopping for those classic pieces at a discount.
If you’ve been focusing on trying to create more of a capsule wardrobe, I also can’t suggest enough taking time to sift through the sale. You can snag some great everyday basics for practically any budget. Especially if you’re a mama like me and need to grab some back to school clothes for your kids or even for the guy in your life (I rounded up all of my favorites for the guys here).

Another tip for the mamas out there reading this—curbside pickup. Of course anyone can utilize it and I highly recommend it, but if you’re running around like I am right now trying to prepare for baby number 5, it’s definitely the convenience factor you’ve been looking for.

What basics are you shopping for right now? I want to know your best purchase yet!

The biggest holiday of the summer is upon us and I have to admit, I’m pretty excited. We just wrapped up the kitchen remodel of our A-Frame cabin on Lake Arrowhead and it’s going to be so nice to have it done and ready for my family next week. Although I’m excited about family time and the cabin, I also had to get everyone’s outfit for the 4th just right!

So like I said, we will be spending the holiday at Lake Arrowhead, which means I opted for a simple white dress for myself, a blue banana dress for my eldest, polos for my boys, and overalls for my youngest daughter. I love how Nordstrom always has an awesome online selection of girls and boys clothes. My eldest is growing like a weed, so if I’m unsure about sizing I order two sizes and easily return from home. Having a large family, Nordstrom has also provided conveniences like curbside pick up. So easy! I just parked and called the number they provided and me and the kids and I waited in the car while the store associate loaded our bags. Super convenient and just another reason to love Nordstrom right? When I’m dressing them, it’s all about simplicity when you’re planning on having a low key weekend with lots of grilling and my favorite flag cake. Have you ever made a flag cake? It’s amazing! I’ve included the recipe below.

Whatever you’re doing for the holiday, I hope you have a lovely 4th of July with friends and family enjoying all the freedom our country has to celebrate.

As you probably know by now, eBay is a place I visit frequently for lots of designer products. Because who doesn’t love an amazing deal? This mama does, that’s for sure. I’ve scored A LOT of amazing things on eBay and I’m often asked how, specifically, “how do you know it’s authentic?” This is a totally valid question, especially in the world of online shopping. You never want to be in the position where you’re expecting a specific quality of product, but what arrives at your door doesn’t match the pictures or the price you paid.
If you’ve ever wanted to shop on eBay, but have let this fear hold you back, don’t worry! I’ve got you covered with five tips that’ll leave you wondering why you didn’t start shopping on eBay sooner!
How to buy authentic luxury items off eBay 101
1. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. It can be hard to turn away from what appears to be the perfect item. The best thing to do in these instances, though, is listen to your instincts and not buy the product.
2. Research the seller and read his/her feedback. This may feel a little time consuming, but it’s worth it to avoid buying an inauthentic product. Reviews from other buyers can be very telling, so take the time to vet sellers.
3. Compare pricing. Again, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I recommend browsing around and trying to find multiple options of whatever it is you’re looking for. This way you can compare what the sellers are asking for and then compare it to what it retails for. If there’s one option that’s significantly lower, be skeptical.
4. Note where the item is coming from. For example, if a product is coming from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan or anywhere international, I usually skip that seller and keep looking. I’ve only ever purchased from US sellers. The location of the seller can be a major red flag for authenticity, so pay close attention to this.
5. Don’t be shy about asking the seller for a serial number or receipt. I’ve found it really helpful to speak with the seller before I bid with any additional questions I may have. You have nothing to lose by doing this. Most are very kind and offer up any and all details about the product they’re selling.
If you’re still hesitant about taking on these tips, take a look at eBay Authenticate!
Happy bidding!
